Hello! My name is Lauren Miles! I grew up in Overland Park, Kansas for my entire life. In 2020, I came to St. Louis to study Music Education with a Choral Emphasis at Webster University! This is my 4th year at this school with only one semester left before I graduate!
Music is a huge part of my life! The first time I remember being interested in the study of music was when I was forced to go to a "Justin Bieber" summer camp. I truly hated the idea of going to this camp because my 8-year-old brain believed it was "weird" to like his music. However, this camp was truly a blessing because it started my love for music and performing. Throughout those years, I spent time learning how to play the violin, how to sing, how to dance, and how to act.
In my junior year of high school, I was invited to be a part of the Kansas All-State Choir. During my time singing with this choir, I realized how important music was to me, and I made my decision to continue my education in music throughout college. I ended up auditioning for a couple of colleges, but ultimately, fell in love with Webster. I loved the program and enjoyed the smaller individualized classes. Below is a video of my high school Chamber Choir performing Eric Whitacre's "A Boy and A Girl". In this performance, I was chosen to lead the choir through this piece, acting as a conductor. My peers' faith in me to lead them through this difficult pieces was one of the reasons I chose Music Education.
Unfortunately for me, I started college the year of 2020, meaning that my first year was experienced online. It was a struggle adjusting to a new city alone. However, when I came back for my sophomore year, I was able to find my footing in this school. Over these last years, I have spent my time performing in both Webster's treble choir, Aurelia, and their Chamber choir. I have also been able to participate in Opera Studio, where I have had amazing opportunities to perform in Opera Scenes. In January of 2024, I had the wonderful opportunity to play Suor Angelica, the title role of Puccini's one-act opera, Suor Angelica. Below is a performance of the aria, "Eccomi in lieta... Oh! Quante Volte" from Bellini's I Capuleti E I Montecchi.
My future plans are to go back to Kansas, substitute teach for the first couple of months, and then apply for choral positions. I also plan to set up my own voice studio as well as audition for choirs, operas, and musicals. In a few years, I will go back to receive a Masters and possibly a Doctorates.
In the upcoming weeks and months, I have multiple performances coming up:
On April 6th, at 7:00pm, I will be presenting my Senior Recital at the Thompson Music Building on the Webster Campus.
April 19th and 20th, Webster University will be presenting its spring scenes, in which I will be conducting the opening scene as well as portraying the mother in Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel.
On May 3rd, Webster University will be presenting a Choral concert, where I will be conducting a piece for the treble choir.
On May 5th, Webster University Chamber Singers will be performing Craig Hella Johnson's Considering Matthew Shepard, in collaboration with the singers at JeffCo and Meramec.
